Knowledge Base

A searchable record of every product decision and shipped feature.

Overview

Product teams make hundreds of decisions every quarter. Six months later, nobody remembers why a feature was scoped a certain way or why a request was rejected. The Knowledge Base captures this institutional memory automatically, so your team never has to re-litigate past decisions.

Every shipped feature, every rejection with a reason, and every changelog entry becomes a searchable record that the whole team can reference.

What Gets Added

The Knowledge Base is populated automatically as your team works. No extra effort required.

Shipped ideas

When an idea is marked as shipped, it enters the Knowledge Base with its full history: original request, who asked for it, the decision rationale, and a link to the issue tracker item.

Decisions (approved, rejected, deferred)

Every decision captures the reason behind it. “Rejected because it conflicts with our enterprise privacy model” or “Deferred to Q3 due to capacity” becomes searchable context for future reference.

Changelog entries

If you use IdeaLift's Changelog feature, published entries are automatically cross-referenced in the Knowledge Base, linking what was shipped to the feedback that inspired it.

Browsing the Knowledge Base

Access the Knowledge Base from Insights > Knowledge Base in the main navigation. Entries are organized by:

  • Timeline — Browse entries chronologically to see the evolution of your product decisions
  • Category — Filter by feature area, product module, or custom tags
  • Decision type — View only shipped features, only rejections, or only deferrals
  • Source — See which feedback channels contributed to each decision

Searching

The Knowledge Base supports both keyword and semantic search:

Keyword search

Search for specific terms across titles, descriptions, and decision reasons. Supports exact-match phrases with quotes.

Semantic search

Describe what you are looking for in natural language. “Why did we decide against SSO for small plans?” returns relevant entries even if those exact words were never used.

Search results include a relevance score and highlight the matching context within each entry.

Sharing with Your Team

The Knowledge Base is designed to be a shared reference for your entire product organization:

  • Permanent links — Every entry has a stable URL you can paste into Slack, Notion, or any document
  • Embed in conversations — Reference a past decision in a Slack or Discord message by pasting the link; IdeaLift unfurls a preview
  • New-hire onboarding — Give new team members read access to understand the product's decision history from day one
  • Export — Export the full Knowledge Base or filtered subsets as JSON or CSV for use in other tools
